The 5 Traits of the Best JAMB Tutor in 2025

A generic Maths or English tutor won’t cut it. The best tutor for JAMB preparation is a specialist. Look for these five traits:

Mastery of the JAMB Syllabus & Exam Pattern: They shouldn’t just teach subjects; they teach the JAMB version of the subject. This means knowing the exact topics JAMB emphasizes yearly and the specific format of questions (especially for Use of English).
A Proven Track Record with Past Scores: Don’t just take their word for it. The best tutor for JAMB preparation can show you verifiable improvements from their past students (e.g., “My students improved from an average of 200 to 280+”). Ask for testimonials or case studies.
Focus on Past Questions & Time Management: JAMB is a speed test. The right tutor will drill your child on past questions under timed conditions, teaching them how to quickly identify what a question is really asking.
Strength in Identifying and Fixing Weaknesses: The best tutor for JAMB preparation uses diagnostic tests to find your child’s specific knowledge gaps—whether it’s in “Rounding of Numbers” in Math or “Lexis and Structure” in English—and then targets them relentlessly.
Teaching Exam Psychology: They prepare your child’s mind for the pressure of the exam hall, building confidence and reducing anxiety that can cripple performance.

3 Red Flags to Avoid When Choosing a JAMB Tutor
Knowing what to avoid is just as important. Steer clear if you see:

- No Focus on JAMB-Specifics: They teach the school curriculum but don’t actively use the JAMB syllabus and past questions as their core material.
- Vague Promises: They promise a “high score” but cannot explain their specific methodology or show evidence of past success.
